In Memoriam: Dr. Barr Rosenberg (19422025)

The IFRA community mourns the passing of Dr. Barr Rosenberg, father of modern risk modeling and founder of the Barra model, who left us in February 2025 at the age of 82. A visionary who bridged academic rigor and practical innovation, Dr. Rosenberg revolutionized quantitative finance by expanding the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) into a multidimensional multifactor framework, integrating market capitalization, valuation, industry characteristics, and beyond. His Barra model remains foundational to global financial risk management, shaping asset allocation, performance attribution, and systemic risk analysis.

Dr. Rosenberg’s enduring legacy extends to IFRA, where his wisdom, mentorship, and philosophical guidance profoundly influenced our mission. His unwavering support elevated the association’s impact and inspired generations of practitioners to pursue excellence at the intersection of theory and practice.

We honor his extraordinary contributions and express our deepest gratitude for his lifelong dedication to advancing both the science and humanity of finance. His light will continue to guide us.
